Project Mingde 20+ 明德工程20+

This volume commemorates over twenty years of Project Mingde’s journey, an initiative established by Professor Nicolas Yeung, a 1971 graduate in Civil Engineering of The University of Hong Kong, and his late wife Lorene. The University motto in Chinese, 明德格物, is a call to manifest virtue (明德, Mingde) and to investigate (格物, Gewu). Inspired by this motto, Project Mingde has two core missions: to provide students with experiential learning opportunities through hands-on charitable building projects, and to support rural education policies for ethnic minority tribes in impoverished localities in the Chinese mainland and Vietnam through minor projects. Founded in 2003, Project Mingde has since grown from a construction-focused initiative into a broader programme encompassing community engagement service and scholarship awards.

Project Mingde 20+ highlights more than twenty past projects, each reflecting the commitment and dedication to service and education by all the stakeholders. The book also celebrates the thriving community of academics, students, and alumni that has emerged through Project Mingde’s work.

本書旨在紀念「明德工程」二十餘年的發展歷程。「明德工程」由香港大學1971年土木工程系畢業生楊澍人教授及其已故妻子楊甘月珍女士共同創立。香港大學的中文校訓「明德格物」，意指彰顯美德（明德）與探究事理（格物）。受此校訓啟發，「明德工程」肩負兩大核心使命：一是透過親身參與的慈善建造項目，為香港學生提供體驗式學習機會；二是支持中國內地貧困地區的少數民族鄉村教育，以及在越南展開的小規模公益項目。「明德工程」自2003年成立以來，已從以建設工程為主的計劃，逐步發展成為涵蓋社區參與服務及獎學金等的綜合項目。

《明德工程20+》精選了二十多個過往項目，每一個都體現了所有持份者對服務與教育的承諾與奉獻。本書亦慶賀因「明德工程」而凝聚的學者、學生及校友社群。
